Accident closes I-40 for nine hours after paint product leaks onto roadway

October 15th, 2007 · No Comments

In addition to large loads of equipment, some 18-wheeler trucks serve to transport large amounts of substances – some that would be harmful to cars, homes and the people in them should a spill occur.

When an 18-wheeler carrying a harmful substance, or any substance, for that matter, is involved in an accident, the results can be tragic.

As reported by the Times Herald on October 11, 2007, an 18-wheeler carrying 27,753 pounds of a paint product in 200-gallon drums, rear-ended a 2005 Volvo tractor trailor, causing the drums to shift, three to burst, and 600 gallons of the substance to spill out on the highway.  The accident caused both eastbound lanes of I-40, in Forrest City, Arkansas, to be closed for nine long hours.

Captain Jimmy Sandage of the Forrest City Fire Department explained that the substance being hauled was not a finished paint product, and it was reactive to water.  Further, because it had such a low “flash point”, the remaining load could have exploded.

With the exception of minor injuries sustained by the driver of the 18-wheeler, no one was injured - a positive outcome to what could have been a disaster.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was charged with following too closely.
