Texas Leads Nation in Deadly Stat

Big rigs. 18-wheelers and large transport trucks are the lifeline that keeps intrastate and interstate commerce moving through Texas and across the country. You share the roads with them every day.

But just how safe are they? Austin’s CBS 42 Investigation discovered that more than a third of the trucks traveling right through the Central Texas area are too dangerous to be on the road. That is a shocking statistic some say is causing deadly accidents that could easily be prevented.

Since 1994, Texas has led the nation in the number of commercial motor vehicle fatalities. According to the latest crash statistics one out of every ten accidents involving 18-wheelers ends in death.

Austin defense attorney Rick Leeper has represented both sides in court and says, “A fully loaded 18-wheeler always wins in a collision with a car.”

Commercial Vehicle inspectors with the Texas Department of Public Safety say they’re doing all they can. According to Virgil Verduzco, a DPS State Trooper, “We’re doing our best to put ‘em out of service and have safe trucks on Texas highways.”

The number of inspectors over the past ten years at the Department of Public Safety has tripled but the agency is still outnumbered, as there are more trucks on the road now than ever before. More than a third of trucks inspected in the Austin area were immediately ordered off the road. The inspector determined either the driver or the vehicle was too unsafe to stay on the road.

These were the violations recorded when the inspection stations were open for business. However, the majority of time they are not open and that means the they simply keep on ‘truckin’ whether the trucks are safe or not.
