Truck drivers charged in fatal pileup on I-80. A ruck driver from Medford, Ore. was charged with aggravated homicide by motor vehicle. While driving a semitrailer for Blueflame Express he rear-ended a Nissan Xterra pulling a U-Haul, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol. The driver of the Nissan was 81 years old and from Portland, Oregon. According to the Highway Patrol, he passed away at Carbon County Memorial Hospital.
The 81 year old driver slowed his vehicle and was hit by the semitrailer, who was traveling at about 73 mph. Another truck driver involved in the seven-vehicle chain collision was injured. The second truck driver from Kaum, Texas, was traveling at about 75 mph when her Mayflower truck tractor rammed the rear of a semitrailer. The woman was cited for having alcohol, a sealed bottle of wine, in the cab of a commercial vehicle and for reckless driving. However, according to federal regulations, no alcohol sealed or not may be carried in the cab of the truck.
Because of the conditions, the two truck drivers were moving too fast even though they were traveling the speed limit. The wine was not a cause or reason for the crash, but direct sunlight and speed were. The crash involved two pickup trucks and a total of seven vehicles. The interstate was closed for about four hours.
