Load Shifts, Sends Truck Off Bridge

July 24th, 2008 · No Comments

New Zealand- A truck driver escapes death and any injury after the garbage load he was carrying shifted, causing it to topple of a bridge and bring the truck with it.  The garbage, which was secured in a container, floated downstream with the 150L of diesel that environmental officials estimate fell into the river.

After feeling his load shift, the driver stopped the commercial vehicle and attempted to get out of the cab.  He quickly returned inside the cab as the garbage load continued to shift, and subsequently fall off the bridge.  The load turned the truck a full 180 degrees as it rolled upside down, to rest on the top of the container.  The man was able to escape the cab by climbing out the back window and crawling up the riverbank.

The group Environment Southland put a barrier downstream to catch all the garbage floating down the river.
