Ireland -A four-year-old boy was knocked down last week by a truck carrying coal, died in a Cork hospital early this morning.

The accident happened while the young boy was playing in the street during the lunchtime hour.  He was on a skateboard when he was struck by a truck carrying coal.  Local officials and police treated the incident as an accident.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital after sustaining critical injuries.  He was pronounced  dead by hospital staff at 2 am.

The boy was fighting for his life in Cork University Hospital after the incident at Ardcullen in Knocknaheeney at lunchtime on Friday.

Gardaí today named the boy as Kelvin Purcell from Ardcullen, Hollyhill, Co Cork. He was set to enrol in junior infants on Monday at a primary school in Knocknaheeny.

The boy was pronounced dead in hospital after 2am.
